Butterstick and Babies

Today, hashbrown awoke with a wicked sore throat and the realization that my Christmas holiday break had become a month-long hiatus.

This weekend of course we celebrate the birth of the great Dr. King. The hashbrown household will also be marking the six-month birthday of the newest member of our extended family, sweet Butterstick. Butters, officially Tai Shan, is 6 months old this month, and is clocking in at a weighty and healthy 27 lbs. No Williamsburg hipster look for our Butterstick! For the past few months we have watched Butters sleep, roll logs around, eat, sleep, walk, roll other things besides logs around and sleep some more. You can too here. Here's hoping for many, many more years for our Butterstick!

Also this weekend, somewhere most likely down south or in the southwest, a White Protestant or Hispanic couple will do the dirty and wind up pregnant. Now according to the U.S. Census and the New York Times, a baby is born every 8 seconds in America, someone dies every 12 seconds and we welcome a new immigrant to our shores every 31 seconds. Why is this all important you ask?

Because nine months from now, when that swimmer has gestated into a live little one, it will become the 300 millionth American.
